Adaptec Demonstrates Industry's First Two-Channel, 2 Gbit PCI-X Fibre Channel HBA At Comdex.

), the global leader in innovative storage solutions, is demonstrating the industry's first two-channel, 2 Gbit PCI-X (PCI eXtended) An enhanced PCI bus technology originally developed by IBM, HP and Compaq that is backward compatible with existing PCI cards. PCI and 32-bit PCI-X slots are physically the same, and PCI cards can plug into PCI-X slots.  Fibre Channel host bus adapter See host adapter.  (HBA (Host Bus Adapter) See host adapter. ) at Comdex. Adaptec is also demonstrating the industry's first low- profile, 2 Gbit Fibre Channel HBA, which the company announced October 31.

The Adaptec demonstrations are taking place in the Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA FCIA

Adaptec's dual-channel, 2 Gbit Fibre Channel HBA offers a data transfer rate that is two times the rate of a single-channel 2 Gbit HBA, and four times the bandwidth of today's current 1 Gbit HBA. The HBA incorporates IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  Microelectronic Division's 133 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  PCI-X bridge chip which provides a full gigabyte of bandwidth. The Adaptec two-channel card can take full advantage of the PCI-X 133 bus by delivering 800 Mbytes per second of that bandwidth in full-duplex mode.

The two-channel 2 Gbit PCI-X Fibre Channel HBA provides the highest data transfer rates available for Fibre Channel technology. This performance is well-suited for Storage Area Network (SAN) applications and clustering environments. Adaptec's single-channel 2 Gbit HBA can be used in rack-mount, pedestal or mixed-server environments because of its low-profile form factor.

"Demonstrating these two 2 Gbit Fibre Channel products at Comdex is a significant milestone for Adaptec," said Max Steinhardt, vice president of Adaptec's storage networking group. "In January, we announced a Fibre Channel partnership with Agilent Technologies This article needs sources or references that appear in reliable, third-party publications. Alone, primary sources and sources affiliated with the subject of this article are not sufficient for an accurate encyclopedia article. , and stated our intent to become the leader in Fibre Channel HBAs for the PC server market. With 1 Gbit Fibre Channel products shipping, and two best-of-class 2 Gbit products demonstrating now, Adaptec is delivering on its intent and stated strategy. Adaptec will be offering a family of 2 Gbit products with unique features for Fibre Channel SANs."

"Single-channel, 2 Gbit HBAs are fast but only a two channel card exploits the full benefit of the PCI-X 133 MHz bus," said Peter Aylaian, marketing manager for Fibre Channel products at Adaptec. "Although other companies have announced 2 Gbit PCI-X technology, Adaptec is the first to have a working demonstration with this card."

Adaptec's 2 Gbit Fibre Channel host bus adapter features Agilent Technologies' industry-leading Tachyon tachyon (tăk`ēŏn'), hypothetical elementary particle that travels only at speeds exceeding that of light. According to the theory of relativity, the speed of light is the limiting velocity for all ordinary material particles.  chip combined with Adaptec drivers and SAN management software.

About Adaptec and Agilent

Adaptec and Agilent Technologies entered into an agreement earlier this year to tailor Fibre Channel solutions for worldwide PC server OEMs and resellers. Agilent offers Tachyon ICs, host adapters and software, the newest of which provides two gigabit per second throughput for high-performance, enterprise-class SANs. Adaptec builds Tachyon-based host adapters, and provides drivers and SAN management software backed by a strong sales, distribution, service and support infrastructure to help customers implement Fibre Channel in demanding, PC server computing environments.
