), the global leader in innovative storage solutions, today announced a new RAID architecture that simplifies motherboard RAID designs for Internet server applications as well as full form factor PC servers. The space-saving hardware design, called RAIDpoint, gives OEMs the ability to offer built-in, customized RAID at previously unattainable price points for applications where traditional host-based RAID takes up valuable PCI-slot space. This highly reliable technology is based on Adaptec's market proven RAID software.

Adaptec is showing RAIDpoint to designers and architects at WinHEC2000 in New Orleans New Orleans (ôr`lēənz –lənz, ôrlēnz`), city (2006 pop. 187,525), coextensive with Orleans parish, SE La., between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, 107 mi (172 km) by water from the river mouth; founded  this week, April 24 through April 26, at the Adaptec booth, No. 408.

"The RAIDpoint architecture is an innovation that could change the game in RAID attach rates," said Lee Caswell, vice president of marketing for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  products. "We've essentially created a new RAID category for rackmount servers, and we expect to see attach rates increase as this form factor and cost basis more clearly meet specific customer needs for 100% protection of critical data."

Rack-mounted servers are in large demand by ISP (1) See in-system programmable.

, ASP and web-hosting services because of their ease of installation, maintenance and scalability. These rackmount servers are designed to minimize height and are measured in 1.75" increments, called rack units (U). Motherboard RAID is ideal for thin 1U and 2U high systems because it reduces the need for PCI slots and saves space. All of the RAID hardware is placed on the system motherboard.

RAIDpoint is the only solution available today that offers a modular design In the context of systems engineering, modular design — or "modularity in design" — is an approach aiming to subdivide a system into smaller parts (modules) that can be independently created and then used in different systems to drive multiple functionalities. . It can be customized for specific I/O processors, memory configurations and SCSI SCSI

selections. This allows OEMs to select a motherboard design for a specific price/performance segment.

The first servers based on the RAIDpoint architecture are already in volume production at Dell Computer Corporation (company) Dell Computer Corporation - One of the biggest US manufacturers of IBM PC compatibles.

. These systems are the PowerEdge 2450 ultra slim 2U rackmount server designed for web-hosting applications, PowerEdge 2400 workgroup server in a 6U form factor, and PowerEdge 4400 departmental server in a 7U factor.

"Motherboard RAID implementations require close cooperation between a RAID partner and a system company because we become part of their design and test process," said Doug MacKenzie Douglas (Doug) MacKenzie was a fictional character in UK soap opera Family Affairs, played by Gareth Hale from 2003 to 2005. , vice president of engineering for Adaptec. "Only Adaptec's RAIDpoint has gone through the gauntlet of testing at the Adaptec Compatibility Test Lab followed by successful testing at multiple OEMs leading to high volume shipments in the PC server market."

RAIDpoint is based on the industry-leading SCSI silicon from Adaptec. Adaptec is the leader in SCSI with innovations like Ultra160 SCSI, its Gatling technology (patent pending) for running SCSI and RAID simultaneously on a single controller, and a common interface with Fibre Channel that leverages Adaptec's recent Fibre Channel partnership with Agilent Technologies This article needs sources or references that appear in reliable, third-party publications. About RAID

The acronym "RAID" stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive (or "Independent") Disks. RAID is a method of combining several disk drives into a single logical storage unit. RAID provides real-time data recovery when a disk drive fails, increasing system uptime and network availability. RAID also increases system performance when multiple drives work together.
