THE SQUAWK from May 13, 2003's Closing Bell

On the earnings front Tuesday morning Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) and JCPenney (NYSE:JCP) did all right on their respective bottom lines (WMT met and JCP beat), however revenues and guidance were none too thrilling. Likewise after the close Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT), Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE:CSC), Network Appliance (NASDAQ:NTAP), and Sycamore Networks (NASDAQ:SCMR) all either met or beat estimates, but couldn't deliver prognoses that would generate any heat.

To add tragic injury to insult, the bombings in Saudi Arabia probably took some additional starch out of the markets on Tuesday. However even with the less than scintillating scin·til·late

news on virtually all fronts the pullback on Tuesday was of the mildest sort.

S&P 500 Index (CBOE:SPX): We had a small red candle from Tuesday on average volume. If that's a reversal candle (a harami) it's pretty inconclusive as it remained in the upper half of yesterday's candle. The uptrend shows no real sign of weakening on price, OVM, or on either Stochastic. If there's any weakening at all it's on overall volume over the past 4 days, which is lower than it was on the prior 7 days.
