Betty Adam is an Episcopal priest, part of the still-controversial movement to allow women to be equals of men within the Christian church. She also holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Rice University. She looks at myths and traditions about Mary Magdalene; in the appendix she compares three translations of The Gospel of Mary (those by Jean-Yves Leloup, by Karen L. Virtually all Christian groupings use or have used art to some extent. , and writes extensively about third-century murals from Dura-Europos, a village on the Euphrates River in Syria, depicting Mary Magdalene differently than the images we've seen in the West. She draws comparisons between the Greek myth of Psyche and the meaning of Mary Magdalene, holding a lamp, seeking truth. The reason Betty Adam has been so interested in Mary Magdalene is personal, as it is for many women in the Christian tradition, and it is her personal search for truth, inspired by Mary Magdalene, that infuses her scholarship.

This is a brief book, one that is easy to understand for anyone with an interest in portrayals of women in religion, especially in the Christian traditions. Adam sees Mary Magdalene as a figure of tolerance, a bridge between religions, especially Judaism, Islam and Christianity. The subtitle, Living the Spirituality of Mary Today, refers to interfaith worship at the Rothko Chapel in Houston that celebrates each individual's search for connection with the sacred.
