, Zirinski
(Middle Eastern studies, Harvard U.) analyzes advertising in a leading
women's magazine for hidden meanings and marketing strategies. He
finds that international advertisers peel away identifiable cultural
ties from their products, and then rebuild their images to suit Saudi
expectations and culture. Zirinski focuses on such commodities and
luxury goods such as timepieces, cars, food, cosmetics cosmetics, preparations externally applied to change or enhance the beauty of skin, hair, nails, lips, and eyes. The use of body paint for ornamental and religious purposes has been common among primitive peoples from prehistoric times (see body-marking). and personal care
products, electronics, leisure and recreation, with a fascinating
chapter on calligraphy calligraphy (kəlĭg`rəfē) [Gr.,=beautiful writing], skilled penmanship practiced as a fine art. See also inscription; paleography.
European Calligraphy
In Europe two sorts of handwriting came into being very early. as a transport for the sale of pens that includes
an analysis of language and grammar. Zirinski finds within these
advertisements a "hybridic Arabism" that is not quite what it
seems to be on the surface.
