, Advertising Executive Kim Blatt has turned his hobby into artistic recognition -- and a major charitable success.

A partner in Slocum Blatt Advertising of Fleetwood, Blatt has been named to the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen as a Juried Member in the field of woodturning. The new designation recognizes his excellence in creating original, hollow vessels of fine wood.

Only a select number of Juried Members are admitted annually; Blatt's achievement is especially noteworthy because of the short time he has actively pursued the craft. Woodturning is the art of fashioning wooden blocks into various shapes on a lathe lathe (lāth), machine tool for holding and turning metal, wood, plastic, or other material against a cutting tool to form a cylindrical product or part. It also drills, bores, polishes, grinds, makes threads, and performs other operations. , a power tool that spins the wood at hundreds of revolutions or more per minute.

Turning hollow vessels is particularly demanding because the craftsman must carve the interior of the vessel through an opening sometimes no larger than one inch.

The Guild, headquartered in Richboro, is a statewide network of chapters and members in categories including wood, glass, pottery, textiles and more. For 50 years, the Years, The

In awarding Juried Status, the Guild cited Blatt's work as demonstrating "excellence of craftsmanship, resolved design, and a (unique) flavor of style."

Blatt chooses a range of fine woods for his work, including cherry, ebony ebony, common name for members of the Ebenaceae, a family of trees and shrubs widely distributed in warmer climates and in the tropics. His Charity Work Earns

Earlier this year, Blatt's woodturning efforts on behalf of needy children raised a record sum, and brought him special recognition. The Reading native received the "Legion of Honor Award" in March from The Chapel of Four Chaplains The Four Chaplains were four Army chaplains who were killed in action when the USAT Dorchester was hit by a torpedo and sank on February 3, 1943. They helped other soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their life jackets when the supply ran out. . The non-profit group, formed in 1951, is named for four Army chaplains who died aboard a torpedoed WW II troopship while giving comfort to the crew.

The Chapel honors those who perform outstanding service to the community, nation or humanity.

In conferring the Legion of Honor, the Chapel recognized Blatt's work last year with The Keystone Turners to benefit the Junior Service League. The Turners raised over $2,000, plus a truckload truck·load

The sum raised--almost half of JSL's entire toy contributions in 1998--was generated by the Turners' appearance at a woodworking show in Philadelphia. Set up at six woodworking lathes, group members turned raw blocks of wood into old-fashioned tops, for which contributors pledged donation amounts.
