Actuate With 128% Growth Recognized by IDC as Fastest Growing Vendor in End-User Query and Reporting Category.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 13, 2001

Actuate Cites Pure Web Information Delivery Solution, Zero Training for End Users, Java Focus, and Competitive Server Pricing as

Key Factors Fueling High Growth

Actuate(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:ACTU), the Information Delivery market leader, today announced it is the fastest growing vendor in the worldwide end-user query and reporting market (EUQR), according to leading industry research firm IDC.

As published this week in IDC's annual Information Access Tools Market Forecast & Analysis report, Actuate increased its market share in the EUQR category by 81 percent, with revenue growth of more than 128 percent from 1999 to 2000. According to IDC's report, traditional business intelligence and reporting companies Business Objects and Crystal Decisions grew 45.9 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively.

"The challenges of enabling the broad workforce with information have put new demands on organizations to provide scalable Information Delivery architectures," said Mark Smith, president of Full Circle Strategies. "Actuate has grown significantly faster than others in providing robust Web-based Information Delivery software with one of the best cost of ownership models available in the industry."

IDC forecasts the Web-based portion of the EUQR category to grow at Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of approximately 64.2 percent through 2005 versus the overall EUQR category with CAGR of 29.9 percent. "Information Delivery is paramount for Web-based, end user query/reporting software. This growth is driven by companies that seek to provide customers, partners and employees with quick and easy access to operational data from CRM systems, supply chain applications and other data sources," said Dan Vesset, senior analyst at IDC. "While ad-hoc query and reporting and multi-dimensional analysis is performed by a finite number of users, operational reporting has the potential to reach a broad internal and external audience of an organization."

"Information Delivery is rapidly taking center stage at Global 2000 organizations," said Brent Thill, vice president of software research at Credit Suisse First Boston. "It is essential for employees, customers, and partners to access real-time operational information both inside and beyond the firewall. Actuate, with a deep management team and keen understanding of customer needs, is a clear leader in delivering operational reporting applications that deliver a rapid ROI."

EUQR is the largest and fastest growing category of the business intelligence market with 46.4 percent share, followed by OLAP with a 33 percent share. IDC forecasts the EUQR market to grow to $6.2 billion by 2005. According to IDC, this growth will be influenced by a number of factors, including:
-- A continued increase in the number of end users for query and reporting
tools -- growth is expected for intranet as well as extranet deployments

-- The increased end-user population will come from all levels of
organizations, from executives to managers, and all other employees --
opportunities for query and reporting tools exists across all business
functions

-- The market can be divided into analytical and operational reporting --
although the lines between the two are expected to diminish over time, at
present the operational reporting market represents the larger portion of the
overall market.

"Actuate's ability to successfully execute against its business objectives as well as a series of good technology decisions regarding our Information Delivery product line -- in particular our focus on the Web instead of mainframe or client-server -- are key factors that combined have allowed us to grow significantly faster than other reporting vendors," said Nobby Akiha, vice president of marketing at Actuate. "The Actuate e.Reporting Suite is a 100% pure Web solution that requires zero training for end users. Our Information Delivery solution supports multiple output formats including DHTML, PDF, XML and, through a recent acquisition, Excel compatible spreadsheets. In version 5 of the Actuate e.Reporting Suite, Actuate added support for Java (EJBs) and open security (LDAP). These capabilities have proven to be a very valuable asset to Web application developers of Global 2000 companies and leading OEM vendors who continue to increase use of Actuate to deliver vital information to their customers, partners and employees."
