The results of the performance test conducted at the Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ:SUNW) Benchmark Center located in Frankfurt, Germany, resulted in an industry leading performance record. This test establishes Actuate's outstanding performance and scalability results are not limited to relational database reporting but encompass sophisticated reporting for applications such as SAP(R) Business Information Warehouse (SAP BW), a core product within the SAP NetWeaver(TM) integration and application platform, on the Solaris(TM) Operating System (OS).

Highlights of the tests include:

--Surpassed previous UNIX performance records for Report Viewing and Batch Generation

--Served 15,000 active users (equating to a user population of 1.5 million users with a 1 percent concurrency rate) on 32 CPUs, averaging 469 active users per CPU

--Generated 132 million report pages per day on just 32 CPUs

--Attained near-perfect scalability (greater than 95 percent) for report generation

--Achieved 100 percent CPU utilization in mixed load test environment

The scalability test results indicate that IT Consolidation efforts are most effective when applications take full advantage of CPU power and are designed for 100% user adoption across the enterprise and beyond. Actuate's performance running on Sun's Solaris OS and executing queries against SAP BW are a clear demonstration of the kind of performance and resulting ROI that are attainable when enterprise reporting, data sources and hardware are optimally designed to work together to provide economical solutions for customers.

About the Test

All Actuate iServer cluster nodes were 8-CPU "virtual servers." The available lab hardware included two 24-CPU Sun Fire(TM) 6800 servers, each of which were partitioned into 2 8-CPU virtual servers and 2 4-CPU virtual servers, where each virtual server had its own OS image. The Actuate iServer was deployed on the four 8-CPU virtual servers, and Sun Java(TM) System Application Server and Actuate's Active Portal were deployed on the four 4-CPU virtual servers. SAP BW was deployed on two 64-CPU Sun E10000 boxes at 400MHz. The Actuate report encyclopedia and the SAP BW IDES sample database were stored on a Sun StorEdge T3 array, configured as RAID 5 for extra availability.

The tests covered the spectrum of Enterprise Reporting Application scenarios including generating batch reports, viewing cached reports and on-demand requests. In addition, a real world environment was simulated with mixed load tests. Typically, as evidenced by Actuate's customer deployments, approximately 1 percent of the total user population is active at one time; therefore, this result indicates that Actuate can support a significant user population numbering 1.5 million users.
