, a visionary new company focusing on Mac OS X success in the corporate enterprise, today announced the immediate availability of the Mac-first, Mac-only Actual ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) A database programming interface from Microsoft that provides a common language for Windows applications to access databases on a network.  Driver for Microsoft SQL Server A relational DBMS from Microsoft that is a major component of the Windows Server System. It is Microsoft's high-end client/server database and is closely integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio and the Microsoft Office System. .

The driver allows a Mac user to access SQL Server An earlier relational DBMS from Sybase and from Microsoft. Sybase introduced SQL Server in 1988 for various Unix versions. In that same year, with help from IBM, Sybase created an OS/2 version that Microsoft licensed and branded as Microsoft SQL Server.  databases from applications such as Excel, using queries to populate spreadsheets, charts, and graphs with live data. The driver can also be used to incorporate SQL Server connectivity into third-party applications or even custom software written in Carbon, Cocoa, REALBasic, or PHP (PHP Hypertext Preprocessor) A scripting language used to create dynamic Web pages. With syntax from C, Java and Perl, PHP code is embedded within HTML pages for server side execution. .

Unlike many competing products, the Actual ODBC Driver for Microsoft SQL Server does not require that any special software be installed on the SQL Server machine itself. And since the driver supports both methods of SQL SQL

Anyone familiar with setting up an ODBC connection on a Windows machine will feel at home with the configuration wizard, while Mac users will experience the ease of use and native OS X interface they have come to expect.

"Our products target the population of Mac OS X-based developers who find themselves working in primarily Windows-based enterprise IT," a company spokesman said. "Our ODBC driver brings to these developers the same SQL Server connection and data manipulation capabilities that their Windows-based peers have."

The first in a suite of new tools and products, the Actual ODBC Driver for Microsoft SQL Server gives Mac OS X developers one less reason to reach for that Windows machine in the course of their work.

The Actual ODBC Driver for Microsoft SQL Server is available for under $30 per license, with no minimum licensing requirements. To purchase the software or download an evaluation copy, please visit http://www.actualtechnologies.com/
