Taylor (disabilities studies, Syracuse U.) explores the role of several World War II-era conscientious objectors in exposing substandard conditions in psychiatric hospitals after performing civilian public service in these institutions. Written for general readers, this book uses archival materials, correspondence and interviews to track the efforts of these volunteers as they enlisted the support of newspapers, magazines and public figures such as Eleanor Roosevelt and Pearl S. Buck. Appendices include lists of conscientious objectors in civilian public service as well as members of National Health Foundation.
