SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 5, 2003

California Lottery's "The Big Spin(R)" show airs Saturday, April 5, 2003, in twelve television markets statewide. Contestants on this week's show win a total of $167,500.

Actress Hattie Winston presented Bart Hanchett with the California Lottery's Hero in Education Award. Hanchett is a volunteer at Sunset Elementary School elementary school: see school.  in Ventura.

For the past six years, Hanchett with the help of his wife and friend, Dwight Evans
    Dwight Michael Evans (born November 3, 1951 in Santa Monica, California), nicknamed "Dewey," is a former right fielder and right-handed batter who played for the Boston Red Sox (1972-90) and Baltimore Orioles (1991).
    , has helped make sure that Sunset's kids have the most state-of-the-art computer equipment available. He does this by contacting businesses and soliciting donations of used computers. Hanchett picks up the equipment, loads it into his car, and personally delivers it to Sunset Elementary. Once there, he and his friend, Evans, put their technical knowledge to use, taking each machine apart and seeing what upgrades are needed and completely refurbish re·fur·bish

     the machines, bringing them up to par for Sunset's kids. Once the machines are ready, Hanchett sets them up in the classrooms and makes sure that the teachers and students alike know how to use the equipment.

    Hattie Winston is a veteran and award winning actress.     The Spin-Spin-Spin contestant on this week's show is James Carlisle Sir James Beethoven Carlisle GCMG (born August 5, 1937) was the Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda. He was appointed on June 10, 1993 and ended his term on July 17 2007. He was born in the village of Bolans, Antigua, making him the first Antiguan-born Governor-General.  Jr., a gardener from Bakersfield who wins $150,000. Carlisle explained, "I plan to buy a house and take a vacation." Carlisle purchased his lucky ticket at Bisla Mini Mart in Bakersfield. Carlisle bought a "Big Spin" Scratchers(R) ticket which revealed three "SPIN" symbols on one ticket, that ticket entitled en·ti·tle

    , will progress to the final round of play for a chance to win $2,000 a week for 20 years, winning a total grand prize of over $2 million. Jackman purchased her lucky ticket at Marina Shell Station in Marina. On this week's show, six contestants competed in the first preliminary round of the game moving simulated racecars along a racetrack. Of the six, one contestant, Jackman, moved on to the final round of play. Other "Weekly Payday Raceway" contestants won a combined total of $17,500 with prizes ranging from $2,500 to $5,000.

    The California Lottery lottery, scheme for distributing prizes by lot or other method of chance selection to persons who have paid for the opportunity to win. The term is not applicable when lots are drawn without payment by the interested parties to determine some matter, e.g.  sells its products through a network of more than 19,000 outlets statewide. The Lottery provides 51.9 percent of its revenues to players as prizes, 34.9 percent to public schools and 13.2 percent for administrative expenses, which includes 6.8 percent for retailer commissions. Since 1985, the Lottery has raised more than $14 billion for public schools. The Lottery's contribution equals approximately 2 percent of the state's total education budget.
