Activists bare bodies for peace.

Byline: The Register-Guard

Thirty Eugene area women stripped in mid-May to promote world peace. Now they're selling a postcard documenting the event, with the proceeds financing future anti-war activism.

If the plan spurs you to think "only in Eugene" you'd be wrong.

The Baring Witness project started last November in Marin County, Calif., and has since spread around the globe - Milan, Paris, Cape Town Cape Town or Capetown, city (1991 pop. 854,616), legislative capital of South Africa and capital of Western Cape, a port on the Atlantic Ocean. It was the capital of Cape Province before that province's subdivision in 1994. , Sydney, Hiroshima, even Antarctica.

Portland, Yachats and Ashland residents took their clothes off in February. Tiny rural Williams, about 15 miles south of Grants Pass, followed in March - residents there beating the urban progressives in Eugene by three months. (See www.baringwitness.org).

Some of the events are done modestly on private beaches or in meadows under the lens of female photographers. Others have taken place in high-traffic areas, such as New York's Central Park.

A female photographer scaled a tall oak tree and hung from a harness while snapping shots of the women, who were forming letters with their nude bodies. They spelled out "Love," "Hope" and "No Bush."
