Activist calls for preservation of values.

Manama A prominent social activist has called for popular, parliamentary and official action to combat negative phenomena impacting Kuwaiti society.

"The Kuwaiti society has a set of values and ethics and every civilised society must hold on to its values and ethics seen as the foundations for stability and unity. When a society loses its values, it loses a part of its existence," Shaikha Fareeha Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, president of the Supreme Committee for the Ideal Mother Award, was quoted as saying by Kuwait News Agency yesterday.

In-depth studies and research should also be carried out to help society fight the dangerous crimes and negative phenomena affecting it, Shaikha Fareeha said on the sidelines of the "Lost Values" forum held in Kuwait City.

Dr Sa'ad Al Enizi, head of Ishraqat Al Amal behaviour and family counselling centre, told participants that there was a need to deal with these phenomena before they threatened society.

Religion, as a source of piousness and chastity, plays a major role in reducing their spread, he said.

Last week, Kuwaiti MPs and social activists urged the country's security officials to carry thorough investigations into a media report about recent ceremonies celebrating same-sex marriages.

"The interior ministry has to act promptly and decisively and probe the same-sex marriage allegations published in a local paper. Security officials have to end these alien occurrences and punish whoever is behind them," MP Mohammad Al Hayef said.
