Accelerating its presence in the next-generation console market, Activision Inc. (NASDAQ:ATVI) has shipped its highly anticipated title, MechWarrior 2, for the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn to more than 15,000 stores throughout the United States and Canada.

The revolutionary action-combat game is based on the company's monster PC hit MechWarrior 2 -- which has shipped more than 700,000 retail units worldwide to date -- and features all-new missions, powerups and graphic effects. The announcement was made by Bobby Kotick, chairman and chief executive officer, Activision.

MechWarrior 2 for console systems combines pulse-quickening arcade combat action, stunning graphic and lighting effects and award-winning music and audio, delivering an unprecedented and explosive mechanical warfare experience.

With such special features as hyper-speed powerups, eight custom control configurations and nearly 50 missions plus training and instant action scenarios, MechWarrior 2 for PlayStation and Saturn packs all the relentless nerve-wracking excitement that console gamers demand.

Upon reviewing the game, leading console publication Electronic Gaming Monthly described MechWarrior 2 as "one of the most complicated and rewarding sims you can play on the consoles," and raved that "it's definitely the best console 'Mech game available."

In MechWarrior 2, players strap into the cockpit of one of 12 BattleMechs which can be customized with more than 20 lethal armaments including missiles, lasers and machine guns. Choosing between Instant Action, training and multiple mission gameplay modes, players battle across a variety of terrains, ranging from urban landscapes to ice to canyons to desert, transforming each mission into a new high-powered experience.
