Several weeks ago, AASA's receptionist transferred a call to me from a member seeking advice. It came from a former superintendent who had moved into a university professorship and wondered whether it would be worthwhile to retain his AASA AASA American Association of School Administrators

. Donna contributed an unusual article in this issue in which, on her own initiative, she interviewed a series of top thinkers--including Stephen Covey cov·ey

and Daniel Pink--on whether the current federal emphasis on accountability will produce the young citizens needed in the global workforce.

Donna represents a higher education member of AASA who makes the most of her opportunities. A former central-office administrator, she's been a primary organizer of the popular Job Central strand Strand, street in London, England, roughly parallel with the Thames River, running from the Temple to Trafalgar Square. It is a street of law courts, hotels, theaters, and office buildings and is the main artery between the City and the West End.

at AASA national conferences since 1999. She's also reviewed three or four new books a year for The School Administrator. She has presented at several AASA conferences and currently is helping AASA on a qualitative study of the membership.

What does Donna get out of these experiences? She says she's "emotionally touched" by AASA's deep commitment to public education and children. "Mostly I feel the passion for purpose that the association has. It attempts to balance the immediate needs of the many members with the broader needs of tomorrow. This cannot be an easy task. Presenting information in a timely manner that is comprehensive enough to assist school leadership in the tough challenges they face, initiate thoughtful dialogues between colleagues and speak to the issues.

"The opportunities that I have had, as a result of my relationship with AASA have challenged my thinking, supported my personal and professional growth and established connections with other professionals from around the country. I am a better teacher, researcher and leader because of AASA."
