The NSA is deploying Active Software's Integration System in several projects to integrate the agency's disparate applications. Principal use focuses on revamping existing homegrown middleware systems and replacing them with a uniform commercial solution. The expectation is that deployment, as well as operating and maintenance (O & M) costs, will be significantly reduced by using the Integration System. Overseen by the U.S. Department of Defense, NSA is one of the nation's largest intelligence agencies.

NSA has multiple Integration System projects in process. The projects provide database integration, back-end processing and notification, information distribution, and rule-based systems. Active Software's Integration System was first installed at NSA in the summer of 1996. It is being deployed in an effort to reduce the cost of internal development and apply standard commercial solutions to the agency's integration needs.

"Our contract with NSA marks our second major installment within the federal government, following last year's announcement with the U.S. Department of Transportation," said Jim Green
