This frees up disk space and ensures that any communication that may become non-compliant beyond its lifetime is deleted. On the expiry date, communication is marked and automatically deleted. An over-ride mechanism suspends deletion in certain circumstances, for example, if a regulator has indicated that they will be requesting email evidence and emails related to a certain period/person or topic should not be destroyed.
