In this book, Bob Sullo creates for the reader a practical understanding of how internal control psychology allows educators to foster a positive learning environment that motivates students to behave responsibly and achieve academically. The author begins by describing theory and research about internal motivation and student learning, followed by vignettes utilizing internal control psychology principles at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Sullo builds his case for cultivating internal motivation in students from early theory and recent research of William Glasser William Glasser, M.D. is an American psychiatrist born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1925, and developer of Reality Therapy and Choice Theory. His ideas, which focus on personal choice, personal responsibility and personal transformation, are considered controversial by mainstream (2000), which-involves how we meet our internal needs of belonging, power or competence, freedom and fun. He also weaves the precepts of Robert Marzano's (2003) classroom management research and Eric Schaps' (2003) focus on building community in the classroom. He cites other research that reveals the influence of internal control psychology with trained educators, which decreases the incidence of discipline-related issues and increases student achievement. At the end of each chapter, Sullo comments on each of the vignettes and then provides readers with a set of tips. Sullo, with over 30 years of experience as an educator, is a popular presenter to audiences of educators and parents regarding what works to activate student learning.
