PC Card Reader Brings PC Card Technology to Desktop Computers

The easy-to-install external device brings the functionality, portability and convenience of PC Card (PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, San Jose, CA, www.pcmcia.org) An international standards body and trade association that was founded in 1989 to establish a standard for connecting peripherals to portable computers. The CameraConnect connects to the parallel port of any desktop computer for fast, simple installation, and does not require any external AC power. Cards may be "hot swapped To pull out a component from a system and plug in a new one while the main power is still on. Also called "hot plug" and "hot insertion," hot swap is a feature of USB devices, allowing an external drive, network adapter or other peripheral to be plugged in without having to power down the " -- inserted and removed without shutting down the system. The card reader is compatible with CameraCard(TM), ActionTec's PC Card digital storage medium, and other PCMCIA Type I and II, and CFA (Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986) Signed into law in 1986, the CFA was a significant step forward in criminalizing unauthorized access to computer systems and networks. The Act applies to "federal interest computers" that include any system used by the U.S.  (Compact Flash Association) cards.

The most popular application anticipated for the new card reader is the transfer of images from digital cameras using PCMCIA cards such as ActionTec's CameraCard as "digital film." "The convenience of storing and transferring files, available through CameraCard and CameraConnect, will help take digital photography to the mainstream and reinforces the benefits of PC Card solutions," states Elliot Hadaegh, VP of sales and marketing for ActionTec.

By using the PC's parallel port, the CameraConnect achieves significantly higher data transfer rates than a digital camera can achieve with a serial port connection. The product is expected to be exceptionally popular with graphic designers, web page developers, real estate agents,contractors and other professionals who need instant photography or need to transmit photographs electronically. The card reader also streamlines data exchange between PDA's, notebook and desktop computers, facilitating data transfer and backup.

CameraConnect provides a 68 pin PCMCIA socket for Type I or II cards, and a 50 pin socket for CFA (Compact Flash Association) cards. Indicator LEDs show operational status, power, and data transfer mode.

The product is compatible with DOS, Windows 3.x Windows 3.x can refer to either an individual or all of the following versions of Microsoft Windows:
  • Windows 3.0
  • Windows 3.1x
These should not be confused with the first three releases of Windows NT, which were also given "3.x" version numbers, i.e.
