Early life
Nolte was born in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Helen (née King), a department store buyer, and Franklin Nolte, a farmer's son who
 and Jessica Lange-were at work on films in Wilmington ["Will The State's Film Deal Go Down?" April 19881. That's back when Dino De Laurentiis was trying to turn the city into Hollywood East.

But after a bout with bankruptcy, De Laurentiis Entertainment Group De Laurentiis Entertainment Group (DEG) was a production company/distribution unit founded by producer Dino De Laurentiis. The company is notable for producing Manhunter and distributing .  sold its 32-acre complex to Los Angeles-based Carolco Pictures Carolco Pictures, Inc. was an independent production company, that within a decade went from producing such blockbuster successes as and the Rambo series to being made bankrupt by bombs such as Cutthroat Island and Showgirls.  Inc. - the people that brought you Arnold Schwarzenegger's Total Recall and all those Sylvester Stallone Sylvester Stallone (born Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone on July 6, 1946) is a two-time Academy Award-nominated American actor, director, producer and screenwriter. The deal went down last May Since then, Carolco, with 1989 revenues of $150 million, has arrived with a brand-new script.

"I'm kind of like a motel. I'm renting room and equipment," says Kent Swaim, who has 20 employees, compared with the 200 or so DEG had in 1986. Carolco has as many as a dozen films going on at once, compared to DEG's four or five.

Instead of doing as DEG once did - almost monopolizing the studio in hopes of scoring a big hit - Carolco markets its space to others. It may not be glamorous, but getting $250,000 rent for six weeks helps Carolco do what DEG couldn't - pay its bills.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (or simply Ninja Turtles and abbreviated TMNT
 II, for instance, was filmed in Carolco's Wilmington studios. (The original was shot there, too.)

"The secret to the studio's success is to keep it occupied," Swaim says. "By the fall of 1990, we had 100 percent occupancy."
