Acterna Debuts 40Gbit/s Optical Tester to Speed Development, Roll Out of Next-Generation SONET/SDH Networks.

Business Editors/Hi-Tech Writers

SUPERCOMM 2002

GERMANTOWN, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 4, 2002

First Tester to Provide Complete SONET/SDH Frame Analysis For Use in

the Lab and the Field

Acterna (Nasdaq:ACTR ACTR American Council of Teachers of Russian
ACTR Actuator
ACTR Association for Canadian Theatre Research
ACTR A Christmas To Remember
ACTR Assistant Contract Technical Representative (NMCI liaison)
) today announced that it is supporting the development and roll out of new high-speed optical networks and services with the addition of 40Gbit/s capability to its portable Advanced Network Tester (ANT) for use in the lab or in the field.

The Acterna ANT-40G is the first tester that provides complete analysis of framed signals on SONET/SDH networks operating at OC-768c/STM-256c and will allow manufacturers and service providers to verify high-speed networks and network components. The tester will be on display at Supercomm in Atlanta, June 4-6, Acterna booth 23246.

As 40Gbit/s systems and services begin to migrate from the laboratory into the optical core network "backbone," manufacturers must speed the development of new products, and service providers must work quickly to ensure proper integration of these products into existing networks.

In the manufacturing environment, Acterna's ANT-40G will allow equipment vendors to shorten (audio, compression) Shorten - A form of lossless audio compression.  product development timelines This article or section contains self-references.

and decrease time to revenue by verifying that prototype optical network components, including boards, systems and interfaces, are properly designed and are compliant with industry standards.

"Network equipment manufacturers will use Acterna's ANT-40G in verification labs where the tester will ensure the overall performance of systems that carry concatenated or structured 40 Gbit/s streams," said Bernhard Mueller, Acterna general manager, optical transport. "As higher rates move from the laboratory environment into the network, the Acterna ANT-40G will help operators install, maintain and troubleshoot To find out why something does not work and to fix the problem. Troubleshooting a computer often requires determining whether the problem is due to malfunctioning hardware or buggy or out-of-date software. See debug.  network elements running at 40Gbit/s."

The Acterna ANT-40G allows users to verify a wide range of SONET/SDH parameters, including overhead generation and analysis, pointer pointer, breed of large sporting dog developed in England more than 300 years ago. The ANT-40G also offers remote access via Ethernet interface 10baseT or 100baseTx connection, and can be equipped with RS.232, TCP/IP TCP/IP

Acterna's broad portfolio of fiber optic instruments and solutions also play a significant role in addressing challenging issues, such as chromatic dispersion See dispersion.  and polarization mode dispersion Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is a form of modal dispersion where two different polarizations of light in a waveguide, which normally travel at the same speed, travel at different speeds due to random imperfections and asymmetries, causing random spreading of optical pulses. , in 40Gbit/s networks. Many of these will be exhibited at Supercomm.
