) today announced that John Ratliff, senior vice president and chief financial officer for Acterna, the company's communications test and management unit, has been named corporate vice president and chief financial officer for the corporation, effective January 1, 2002.

Ratliff assumes the position from Allan M. Kline, who is retiring from the company, but will continue to serve as a member of the board of directors of Acterna Corporation.

He has the financial, managerial and leadership skills to guide the corporation's financial operations and performance going forward."

Ratliff, 42, previously spent 19 years with IBM where he was vice president of finance for the company's PC unit. While at IBM, he also held the position of vice president of finance and planning for the company's Latin American operations and served as the corporate assistant controller.

In his new position, Ratliff will be responsible for executive management and oversight of Acterna Corporation's financial operations. He will report to Ned Lautenbach, chairman and CEO, and John Peeler, president. He will remain based in Germantown, Md., the home of Acterna's test unit.
