The standards, which also address the technology of forward error correction A communications technique that can correct bad data on the receiving end. Before transmission, the data are processed through an algorithm that adds extra bits for error correction. If the transmitted message is received in error, the correction bits are used to repair it.  (FEC), will drive the emergence of converged intelligent optical transport networks (OTN) by enabling faster and more accurate transmissions.

Lucent is using the portable Acterna ONT-50 to develop and deliver new G.709-compliant network systems and elements operating at 10.7 Gbit/s. The company will later use the tester in the field to verify correct installation and integration of these elements into the networks of major carriers worldwide.

"We selected the Acterna optical network tester because it was one of the first solutions to offer a fully operational 10.7 Gbit/s OTN analyzer," said Wolfram wolfram: see tungsten.  Sturm, director, research and development, Optical Networking Group, Lucent Technologies. "With the Acterna tester, we will be able to speed the development of 10.7 Gbit/s systems and components for the new LambdaUnite(TM) MultiService Switch (MSS), a next-generation product designed to create the bridge between data-intensive metro networks and high-speed optical core networks."

"By being first to market with a 10.7 Gbit/s solution, Acterna demonstrates that it remains focused on innovative solutions for research and development applications," said Wolfgang Schuster, Acterna group president, optical transport, fiber optics, wireless, and switching. "Acterna is committed to ensuring that manufacturers will have the necessary tools to help bring their solutions to market early and make these technologies a reality."

The Acterna ONT-50 is a compact and modular test solution combining optical and digital testing (DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

, SONET/SDH, OTN) in a single unit, making it a complete solution for both optical layer and performance testing.

The unit can be equipped with the optical Q-Factor Meter (OQM) module to perform in-service measurement of the analog signal quality, and also offers testing for both standard and FEC data rates. The ONT-50 can also be configured to offer dual-port optical spectrum analysis (OSA 1. OSA - Open Scripting Architecture.

) for full-spectrum, real-time analysis of DWDM systems.

Developed by Bell Labs, the LambdaUnite(TM) MSS brings together switching capacity, density and flexibility into one box with an extremely small footprint.

) standards, enables service providers to seamlessly upgrade their networks to 40 Gbit/s and allows them to deliver new value-added services such as gigabit Ethernet. LamdaUnite(TM) MSS will be shown live at CeBIT.

The Acterna ONT-50 with 10.7 Gbit/s will be showcased at CEBIT, March 13-20, at Hall 13, Stand C76 and at OFC, March 19-21, booth 1653.
