) announced today that it will offer a version of Viewlogic's new Optium for Windows VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) A hardware description language (HDL) used to design electronic systems at the component, board and system level. VHDL allows models to be developed at a very high level of abstraction.  simulation software as part of Actel's high level design environment.

This extends the companies' long-standing OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  arrangement.

By offering a behavioral and gate-level simulator with an intuitive, easy to use Microsoft Windows-based graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

, Optium brings workstation performance to a PC. It is first in the industry to support co-simulation on a PC using Windows or Windows/NT. Combined with ACTgen, ACTmap VHDL Synthesis, and Designer Series 3.0, Optium rounds out Actel's high level design tools.

"We looked at all the available competing products and determined that Optium is our best choice," said Tom Todd, Actel's product marketing director. "Optium's intuitive Windows-based user interface complements our strategy of providing customers easy-to-use tools as they move up to higher complexity design."

Featuring the best elements of the most advanced Microsoft Windows applications, Optium includes a Multiple Document Interface See MDI.

for viewing and editing VHDL source code in full color, a graphical hierarchy tree that provides a unique view of design element hierarchy, undockable toolbars and consoles, and a fully integrated, context-sensitive help system.

Also tailored for Windows and complementing Optium, Actel's Designer Series 3.0 tools transforms the users logic design into a specific FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) A type of gate array that is programmed in the field rather than in a semiconductor fab. Containing up to hundreds of thousands of gates, there are a variety of FPGA architectures on the market. . ACTmap, developed for new users of VHDL, provides both logic synthesis and optimization to map the logic to FPGA modules. Rounding out Actel's tools, ACTgen creates high performance FPGA macros for use in schematic- or synthesis-based designs.

Optium for Windows from Actel will be available in the third quarter of 1995, and is priced at $2,995. It will support PCs running under Windows 3.11 and Windows/NT and will also support the Windows 95 operating system when it is released.
