Tomen Electronics is one of Japan's leading distributors of semiconductors, computer peripherals and software.

Tomen Electronics has been a distributor for more than 25 years and is committed to providing its customers with the world's latest technology. Under the agreement with Actel, Tomen will distribute all ProASIC products in process of geometries of 0.25-micron and smaller, as well as GateField's ASICmaster(tm) design tools software. Actel decided to work with Tomen because of its experience distributing the ProASIC products for GateField Corporation in Japan.

In August 1998, Actel and GateField signed a strategic alliance that provides Actel with exclusive rights to market and sell the new 0.25-micron ProASIC product family, which is expected to support densities of up to half a million programmable logic See PLD.  gates. The alliance further provides for migration to smaller process technologies with the potential to produce multi-million gate devices for the ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick." A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor.  (application specific integrated circuit integrated circuit (IC), electronic circuit built on a semiconductor substrate, usually one of single-crystal silicon. The circuit, often called a chip, is packaged in a hermetically sealed case or a nonhermetic plastic capsule, with leads extending from it for ) market. The new ProASIC family is manufactured by Siemens in Germany using FLASH technology and is both non-volatile and reprogrammable.

"Tomen's experience as a distributor in this industry makes it a tremendous asset to Actel as we move forward with our ProASIC product offering," said Patrick Ellington, director of Asian-Pacific sales and marketing, Actel Corporation. "By working with Tomen, Actel will establish its presence in Japan as a solution provider for reprogrammable ASIC solutions."
