Containing up to hundreds of thousands of gates, there are a variety of FPGA architectures on the market.  (field programmable gate array See FPGA. ) prototyping simpler and easier with the announced availability of two new sockets tooled specifically for Actel by Yamaichi Electronics, one of the leading suppliers of prototype and production sockets.

The two new sockets are for the 176-pin TQFP See QFP.  and 240-pin QFP (Quad FlatPack) A square, surface mount chip package that has leads on all four sides and comes in several varieties. PQFP (Plastic QFP) may refer to all of the following QFP types. All quad flatpacks use gull-wing leads, except for the CQFP, which stick straight out.  packages and a complete line of sockets designed to accommodate all Actel FPGAs in TQFP, PQFP (Plastic Quad Flat Package) Refers to many varieties of QFP chip packages, which are molded in plastic. "These new sockets allow designers to take advantage of Actel's non-volatile devices without the complexities of prototype design," said Ken O'Neill, product line manager, Actel. "Rather than removing a soldered chip from the board, a process that is time consuming and risks damage to the PCB PCB: see polychlorinated biphenyl.

, the designer simply replaces the old chip in the socket with a new one," O'Neill explained.

The new sockets accommodate Actel's high-capacity DX family up to 30,000 gates, as well as the high-performance ACT 3 family and the high-value XL family which runs up to 8,000.

Furthermore, the sockets' footprints match those of the Actel parts they support so the same board design can be used in both the prototype and production stages.

Availability and Pricing

The sockets are available now through Actel in quantities of up to 24. Orders for more than 24 units can be handled directly through Yamaichi at 408/456-0797. -0-
