A few recent acquisitions have underscored the increasing popularity and tremendous growth of the content management segment. In the fourth quarter of 2002, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  acquired all the assets of privately held Tarian Software of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Tarian provides technology for e-records management software, which is a growing requirement in regulated industries such as insurance, finance, and government.

IBM says the acquisition enables it to address a key customer need to digitize To convert an image or signal into digital code by scanning, tracing on a graphics tablet or using an analog to digital conversion device. 3D objects can be digitized by a device with a mechanical arm that is moved onto all the corners. , integrate, and manage information across the enterprise in an effort to improve operational efficiencies and reduce costs.

 came from Documentum, which signed an agreement to acquire TruArc, a records management technology company also based in Ottawa. Through the addition of TruArc technology, Documentum said it will be able to accelerate delivery of the records management capabilities that were announced as part of Documentum 5, an updated version of its content management (CM) platform.

With this product, Documentum aims to expand the scope of enterprise CM with support for what it calls "fixed CM," which applies to content not expected to change, such as scanned images or archives. New capabilities include enterprise-grade imaging support for scanning images into the system and records management tools designed for archives and records. Documentum 5 also includes collaboration add-on modules to enable project team collaboration, real-time communications, and cross-enterprise content distribution.
