SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 21, 1995--Acquired Knowledge Inc., the leader in providing software and education tools for working with PostScript documents, will unveil its newest preflight pre·flight

utilities, Download Mechanic Pro and Download Mechanic for Windows, during Seybold in Booth No. 3803.

Currently in beta, these intuitive PostScript utilities are the first to give graphic artists, service bureaus and printers all the tools in one package to easily preview, analyze, test, edit, debug To correct a problem in hardware or software. Debugging software means locating the errors in the source code (the program logic). Debugging hardware means finding errors in the circuit design (logical circuits) or in the physical interconnections of the circuits.  and download PostScript files.

In addition, John Deubert, president of Acquired Knowledge and principal author of the PostScript tutorial for Adobe Systems' ``Blue Book,'' will teach ``Publishing, Printing & PostScript'' on Sept. 26 for Seybold attendees.

To date, more than 100 people have registered for this one-day class. The program fee is $349, and attendees can register by contacting Seybold show management at 415/578-6900.

Both new utilities have the functionality of the company's original Download Mechanic, such as the ability to automatically fix common limitcheck errors; find and automatically download missing fonts; print page ranges and perform batch downloads in the background; and apply a variety of printing effects to the PostScript output.

Designed for Macintosh systems 7.0 and later, Download Mechanic Pro offers significant advancements over Download Mechanic that enhance the ability to successfully work with PostScript documents. These advancements include a PostScript Previewer, PDF (Portable Document Format) The de facto standard for document publishing from Adobe. On the Web, there are countless brochures, data sheets, white papers and technical manuals in the PDF format.  (Adobe Acrobat) Renderer/Viewer and an Improved Analysis Format.

``Before Download Mechanic, users had to purchase several different download and preflight utilities to work with PostScript files. Now, with Download Mechanic Pro, users not only have all the tools in one utility, but are able to quickly preview PostScript output before printing. No other preflight utility has all this functionality built in,'' commented Todd Donahue, vice president of Acquired Knowledge and principal author of Download Mechanic.

Download Mechanic Pro's enhanced capabilities are a result of a built-in PostScript Level 2 interpreter. This feature allows users to preview the PostScript output on their screen before printing. The PostScript Previewer may be viewed in monochrome, grayscale In computing, a grayscale or greyscale digital image is an image in which the value of each pixel is a single sample. Displayed images of this sort are typically composed of shades of gray, varying from black at the weakest intensity to white at the strongest, though in  or color at either 72 or 144 dpi resolution.

Download Mechanic Pro can also render PDF files for on-screen on·screen or on-screen

In addition, Download Mechanic Pro's improved analysis format permits the user to quickly obtain information necessary to confirm that a particular job will print successfully. These WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Pronounced "wiz-ee-wig." It refers to displaying text and graphics on screen the same as they will print on paper or display on a Web page.  features save desktop publishers, graphic artists, service bureaus and printers time and materials labor and materials (time and materials) n. what some builders or repair people contract to provide and be paid for, rather than a fixed price or a percentage of the costs.  confirming the desired output.

Like the previous version, Download Mechanic Pro includes laser proofing, rotation of imagesetter A machine that generates output for the printing process, which is either a film-based paper that is photographed or the actual film for making the printing plates. Input comes from the keyboard, or via disk, tape or modem.  pages to transverse orientation, improved automatic font downloading and file analysis, and lists EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) A PostScript file format used to transfer a graphic image between applications and platforms. EPS files contain PostScript code as well as an optional preview image in TIFF, WMF, PICT or EPSI, the latter being an ASCII-only format.  files and OPI (Open Prepress Interface) An extension to PostScript that provides color separations. It was developed by Aldus Corporation, which was later acquired by Adobe.  images needed by a PostScript file. The software also includes a drop folder (1) A shared subdirectory on a server in the network used to store data for subsequent processing. For example, a drop folder could be used to receive e-mail messages, faxes or print jobs from users.  for users to analyze, test or download any PostScript files dropped in this folder.

Preflighting PostScript files via laser proofs helps eliminate a variety of potential problems between the creator of the file and the service bureau.

By including a file analysis and a laser proof of the PostScript file, the user ensures that the service bureau will know what the file contains and what it should look like. This facilitates setup and any trouble-shooting necessary for correct file output.

Download Mechanic Pro will serve as the new platform for Acquired Knowledge's future preflight utility tools. Acquired Knowledge will continue to sell and support the original Download Mechanic for both Macintosh and Windows, which provides many useful functions at the low price of $249.
