Acopia Networks Delivers Tiered Storage Capabilities for Long Term Data Archival; ESG Report Validates Unique Capabilities of the Acopia in Building Real-time Archival Solutions.

LOWELL, Mass. -- Acopia Networks, the innovator of Adaptive Resource Networking, today announced the availability of a new report that validates the unique capabilities its ARX(TM) products provide in building real-time data Real-time data denotes information that is delivered immediately after collection. There is no delay in the timeliness of the information provided.

Some uses of this term confuse it with the term dynamic data.

), the report validates the ability of Acopia's ARX switches to migrate data between leading file servers and a long term data archival product without any system reconfiguration or disruption in data access. Products used in this test were from Network Appliance (1) A specialized device for use on a network. For example, Web servers, cache servers and file servers can be implemented as general-purpose computers with the appropriate software or as network appliances, which are computers dedicated to a single function and cannot do anything  and EMC (1) (EMC Corporation, Hopkinton, MA, www.emc.com) The leading supplier of storage products for midrange computers and mainframes. Founded in 1979 by Richard J. Egan and Roger Marino, EMC has developed advanced storage and retrieval technologies for the world's largest companies. ; additional tests with other leading systems are also planned.

"Customers are using more and more disk-based systems for long term data archives," said Tony Asaro, senior analyst for the Enterprise Strategy Group. "The challenges with this include moving data between heterogeneous primary and long term archive disk stores transparently to the users without putting a burden on IT staff. The ESG Lab report validated that the Acopia ARX switch has the intelligence, performance and policies to address these challenges."

The validation report, available today, staged a real world scenario of using the Acopia switch to virtualize To cause a virtual technique to be performed. See virtualization.  all data storage systems under a single logical namespace A collection of names for a particular purpose. Typically, each name is unique. For example, tables in a relational database must all have unique names. A Windows workgroup that uses the original NetBIOS naming system requires a different "made-up" name for each computer and printer in . Once in place, the Acopia switch then migrated file data, based on both age and name characteristics, between the existing file systems and the archive without any change in configuration or access disruption. The environment was designed to simulate the workflow that an enterprise would follow to permanently archive file See archive.  data while maintaining the same level of accessibility as it has today.

The performance report is available online at both Acopia (www.acopia.com) and ESG's (www.enterprisestrategygroup.com) web sites.

About Acopia Networks

Acopia Networks is the innovator of Adaptive Resource Networking products, a new class of file switches that uniquely solve the problem of managing unstructured data Data that does not reside in fixed locations. Free-form text in a word processing document is a typical example. Contrast with structured data. See free-form database.  in the global enterprise. Acopia's Adaptive Resources Switches (ARX) allow customers to improve performance and better utilize existing file server infrastructure. The products also provide non-disruptive data replication, migration, and capacity balancing across multiple NAS (1) See network access server.

(2) (Network Attached Storage) A specialized file server that connects to the network. A NAS device contains a slimmed-down operating system and a file system and processes only I/O requests by supporting the popular
devices, thereby reducing management overhead and accelerating business workflow in the process. Information about Acopia's products and services can be found at http://www.acopia.com.
