Acme United to close Bridgeport facility.

FAIRFIELD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 10, 1996--The board of directors of Acme United Corp. (ASE:ACU) announced today that it will close its Bridgeport facility on Sept. 6, 1996.

The 153,000 square foot plant at 100 Hicks Street had been manufacturing and distributing shears, scissors, rulers and related consumer products for the past 129 years since the company's inception. The consolidation of manufacturing operations from Bridgeport to Acme's Fremont, North Carolina plant began in April of this year and has been completed ahead of schedule. During the transfer the facility remained open for packaging and shipping.

Most of the 37 remaining employees will be affected by the shutdown, except for residual maintenance staff.

Walter C. Johnson, president and chief executive officer, said the company intends to sell the property, but for now will utilize the space to house unfinished goods and inventory that can be shipped as needed to Fremont or its other plant in Goldsboro, North Carolina.

Acme United is a leading producer of metal disposable medical scissors and instruments, sterile procedure trays, germicidal products, dressings and wound care packs for hospitals and the alternate care market as well as the largest producer of shears, scissors, rulers and first aid kits for the consumer market.
