Achieving ambitious goals.Daniel Kaplan, AIA, who began his career working part-time for Fox & Fowle Architects while still in high school, continually reaches for and achieves ambitious goals. Today, at the age of 42, he is the newly appointed senior principal of the prestigious Manhattan-based architecture, interior design and planning firm that is known for its quality high-rise expertise. Top on Kaplan's drawing board now are plans to elevate Fox & Fowle's sustainable ("green") design agenda to a higher level and expand the firm internationally. "I saw great potential in Dan at a very young age," stated Brace Fowle, FAIA, founder and senior principal of Fox & Fowle Architects. "He has always set high standards for himself, and in the process, he has not only advanced to his own personal best, but propelled the firm as a whole." Kaplan and Fowle now share the same title and, along with three other partners, run the 85-person firm. The other partners are Sudhir S. Jambhekar, AIA; Sylvia J. Smith, AIA; and Mark E. Strauss, AIA, AICP AICP - Actual Irrigated Crop Production AICP - American Institute of Certified Planners AICP - Association Internationale de Pédiatrie Chiropratique (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association) AICP - Association of Independent Commercial Producers AICP - Association of Insurance Compliance Professionals AICP - Association of Islamic Charitable Projects (Philadelphia, PA) AICP - Aviation Inventory Control Point. More than any other architecture firm, Fox & Fowle has contributed to the "greening" of New York City, advancing sustainable development in the city one building at a time. Kaplan led the architectural and engineering team for New York City's first "green" office tower, the much lauded Conde Nast Building at Four Times Square for the Durst Organization. Time magazine called it "a pioneering preview of better buildings" and The New York Times wrote that it is "commercial architecture at its most inventive." Fox & Fowle received the 2001 National Honor Award for Design, the highest honor that the American Institute of Architects (AIA) bestows on a project, for this work. The design has won seven awards to dale. When this award-winning tower was completed, Kaplan and his team shifted focus to the Reuters Building at Three Times Square, Fox & Fowle's third office tower and 11th major project in Times Square. The firm has also recently designed completed documents for The New York Times Headquarters Building with Renzo Piano Building Workshop and is designing 11 Times Square, for Milstein Brothers, LLC. Kaplan has made significant inroads internationally as well, specifically in China and Russia. In China, he is designing two mixed-use buildings in Beijing. In Russia, he is working on a series of residential and commercial high rise buildings in the New Ring of Moscow which, when complete, will consist of 60 buildings. With his reputation as an industry leader, Kaplan has become a sought-after speaker and author. His article on the Conde Nast Building, "Manhattan's Green Giant" was published in Environmental Design & Construction, and Kaplan's "New York's Revitalized Times Square" was recently published in Urban Land. Kaplan joined Fox & Fowle full-time in 1987 and in 1996 was named a principal and director of the high-rise studio. He has served in a design and leadership capacity for the firm's largest projects, crafting modern award-winning buildings distinguished by their contextual sensitivity, environmental responsibility, and technical sophistication. A 1984 graduate of Cornell University, Kaplan received seven of eight available honors and medals for outstanding design work and scholarship. He is a registered architect in the State of New York and New Jersey, a member of the American Institute of Architects, and has NCARB NCARB - National Council of Architectural Registration Boards certification. "Dan's leadership is a core strength of the firm today," concluded Fowle. |
