Achievements of four-year term highlighted.In the Hester Maclean Oration, the traditional speech of the outgoing president An outgoing president is a president or, generally, other head of state or government when he holds office between the election of his successor and the inauguration by which that successor assumes power. , Jane O'Malley outlined some of the highlights of the life and work of that pioneering nurse leader. O'Malley mused on how NZNO NZNO New Zealand Nurses Organisation today would measure up against the national nursing association formed in 1909 and wondered what Hester Maclean's priorities would have been. She believed they would have included recruitment and retention, nursing leadership and the image of nursing. O'Malley went on to highlight some of the achievements of the last four years. Referring to the relationship with Te Runanga o Aotearoa NZNO, O'Malley said the Te Runanga chair when she became president, Sharon Morunga, had been her early teacher and challenged some of her thinking around Te Runanga's development. She thanked Te Runanga for the wonderful opportunity to experience the best of tikinga Maori. She was proud of what the board of directors had achieved and thanked NZNO staff for their "welcoming and sharing" when she began as president.
