Ace Hardware selects Dataware Technologies for hybrid electronic retail catalog; Best of CD-ROM and online technologies in advanced ordering system.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 10, 1996--In response to retailers demands for an improved electronic product catalog catalog, descriptive list, on cards or in a book, of the contents of a library. Assurbanipal's library at Nineveh was cataloged on shelves of slate. The first known subject catalog was compiled by Callimachus at the Alexandrian Library in the 3d cent. B.C. , Ace Hardware Corporation (Oak Brook, IL) selected Dataware Technologies advanced software to create a high-performance CD-ROM/electronic commerce solution. The new product, CD Checklist, is now shipping to over 500 dealers across the US, with plans to widen wid·en

the distribution to approximately 5,000 in the next three to four years.

CD Checklist offers highly searchable look ups with links to an online system for fast and accurate ordering. The new solution replaces Ace Hardware s online-only checklist application, ACENET, after retailers requested a faster and less expensive solution.

Ace Hardware, a dealer-owned cooperative of more than 5,000 hardware stores in the US and across 55 countries, has over 60,000 item categories available for retailers to purchase, from plumbing and power tools, to paint and electrical supplies. The paper-based catalog, Checklist, consists of nine binders with a total of 10,000 pages.

Dataware incorporated the catalog onto one CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

Combining CD Checklist with the ACENET+ system provides a significant enhancement for Ace retailers. After locating any item on CD Checklist, the retailer can order it online for next day delivery. Over 800,000 records of all Ace s specialty products are contained in the quarterly updated CD Checklist.

CD Checklist offers detailed methods of searching for Ace-stocked items, with information available on retail prices, order multiples, retail units, item descriptions, and graphics. The CD ROM CD ROM Compact Disk Read Only Memory  also provides almost 50,000 graphic images to help locate items. Searching options include; item search; wildcard See wild cards and wildcard mask.  search; commodity group search; checklist browse; and vendor search.
