Accused of blackmail.


A 43-year-old man has appeared in court accused of sending threatening letters (Law) letters containing threats, especially those designed to extort money, or to obtain other property, by menaces; blackmailing letters.

He gained a lot of negative media attention after he won the National Lottery, which converted him into a multi-millionaire. , left, who won a pounds 7.2m lottery jackpot with a ticket bought on Teesside while on day release from prison.

Peter Francis Mark Oates, of Brixton, London, is charged with two counts of blackmail in relation to one letter which allegedly included two bullets and another which went to the home of a neighbour of Hoare, whose ex-wife is from Middlesbrough, on the Darras Hall estate in Northumberland.

The letters allegedly demanded that the convicted rapist leave the area.

Oates, who did not enter any pleas, was remanded in custody until June 22.
