Accuimage Appoints new CEO: Leon Kaufman, Ph.D.

AccuImage Diagnostics Corp. (OTC:BB - AIDP) announced today that it has been appointed Leon Kaufman, PhD. as Chief Executive Officer.

Leon Kaufman received BS in Engineering Physics and Ph.D. in Physics degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, and is Professor Emeritus of Physics, University of California at San Francisco, where he spent 24 years in the Radiology Department and in the Nuclear Medicine Section. In this field he developed a number of advanced counting and imaging devices incorporating gas-filled wire chambers and room temperature and cryogenic semiconductor detectors. However, Dr. Kaufman is most known for his pioneering work in the development of Magnetic Resonance Imaging that became a revolutionary advance in medical imaging and healthcare.

He initiated the UCSF MRI program in 1975, a program that was supported successively by Pfizer, Diasonics and Toshiba, as well as the national Institutes of Health. Under his direction three key ground-breaking products were developed. In 1983, the mid-field MT/S became the first commercially successful MRI scanner. This system was the first whole body superconducting MRI system to receive FDA approval, and the first to use the new enabling inventions of multi-slice and spin echo imaging. In 1988, Dr. Kaufman's group introduced the Access which launched the important new field of Open MRI. This system was the first ultra-low field, open MRI scanner and led to a number of new applications for MRI technology. In 1996 Dr. Kaufman's group introduced the OPART, the first mid-field, superconducting, cryogenless, open MRI; a product that has defined the future standards for open MRI.

After leaving UCSF in 1994, Dr. Kaufman spent six years at Toshiba Medical Systems as Chief Scientist and Vice President of Engineering. He has over 400 publications and holds 37 MRI, medical detector and image processing patents with 9 others filed.
