Accton Technology Corporation of Taiwan (TAIEX TAIEX Technical Assistance Information Exchange Office (EU)
TAIEX Technical Assistance Information Service
: 2345, www.accton.com), global outsourcing partner for networking and communications solutions, and Sandburst Corporation, an innovative provider of solutions for modular networks, today announced that Accton is using Sandburst's HIBEAM(R) chipset and Sandburst's METROBOX(TM) reference platform as the foundation for its new high-end Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) product line.

Accton's new platform supports 24 ports of gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  and two 10-gigabit uplinks. The 40-gigabit platform delivers robust packet forwarding capabilities including Ethernet Bridging, IPv4 and IPv6 Forwarding. The platform also delivers carrier-class features such as MPLS (1) (MultiProtocol Lambda Switching) The earlier name for GMPLS. See GMPLS.

and LER switching, stacked VLANs, VPLS (Virtual Private LAN Service) A multipoint virtual private network (VPN) service from carriers that connects any number of Ethernet LANs together over an IP core, typically using MPLS, although other encapsulation protocols can be used.  and a variety of tunneling protocols. Service providers can use these switches as a cost effective solution for deploying L2 and L3 VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks.  services including Virtual Private Lines and Transparent LAN Services.

Accton is the first major ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) A contract manufacturer that uses its own designs and intellectual property (IP). See contract manufacturer.  provider to offer a carrier class, packet switching solution that will satisfy the growing demands of service providers as they deploy next generation packet networking technology. Most importantly, Accton will deliver the new Carrier/Metropolitan Area Network reference platforms with open APIs, enabling outsourcing partners to differentiate their offerings in the market with custom features and software.

Sandburst's METROBOX reference platform combines industry standard software with a specially configured variant of Sandburst's HIBEAM chipset. OEMs developing systems based on the platform benefit by avoiding the cost of hardware development and instead focus resources on customized software development and network engineering. This approach accelerates delivery of market-leading products while simultaneously generating a higher overall return on investment.

"Sandburst's HIBEAM chipset is an ideal solution for highly functional, carrier class products," said David Myers, Accton's Director of Marketing. "HIBEAM's flexible architecture combined with our cost effective manufacturing capability creates a market-leading solution that lowers our customers' development costs and allows them to focus resources on developing protocol software and management functions."

"Accton's decision to use HiBeam further validates the flexibility of our architecture," said Vince Graziani, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Sandburst Corporation. "It demonstrates that our chipset is an ideal solution for a broad spectrum of carrier-class systems ranging from network aggregation equipment up to high-performance core switching systems."
