Accton Hubs and Adapters Help MIT-CETI Project Connect Shanghai Students to the Internet; Accton Technology Contributes Networking Equipment to Help Create LAN Lab for Shanghai Secondary School.

SHANGHAI, China--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 18, 1997--Using 60 PCI Ethernet adapters and five 16-port hubs from Accton Technology Corp., and networking hardware and software donated by a dozen other vendors, students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) today completed installation of a state-of-the-art network-computing lab at the East China Normal University here.

The six-week effort is part of the China Educational Technology Initiative (CETI) sponsored by MIT, through which MIT undergraduates not only install a computer network and provide Internet access, but train Chinese faculty and students in the use of the World Wide Web and Internet technology.

To help connect sixty computer workstations in a single computer lab, the MIT students asked Accton Technology to contribute PCI-based 10BASE-T network adapters and 16-port Ethernet hubs, a value of more than $5,000. The Accton hardware is used to interconnect the workstations into a single local area network, which is then connected to the Internet through a wireless Ethernet bridge that creates a link to the Internet gateway at East China Normal University.

Roger Hu, Ting Luo, and Mandy Mobley, undergraduates from the MIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, are responsible for installing the network. Once installed, the undergraduates will use the LAN to show the Chinese students how to create their own Web pages, Java scripting techniques, and how to tap the Web for research.
