Accredo Health, Incorporated (NASDAQ:ACDO) announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary, Accredo Therapeutics, Inc. with its 30 branch pharmacies located throughout the United States, has been selected by Aventis Behring L.L.C. as the exclusive specialty pharmacy provider of Zemaira(TM) (alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor (human)) in the United States and Puerto Rico. Zemaira(TM) was approved by the FDA in July for use as chronic augmentation and maintenance therapy in individuals with alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor deficiency (Alpha-1), a life-threatening genetic disorder in some individuals, who demonstrate clinical evidence of emphysema.

Unlike emphysema that develops as a result of smoke inhalation, hereditary emphysema caused by Alpha-1 deficiency is a condition that may affect both the structure and the function of the lungs.
