Accreditation of International Camps Phased Out.

On recommendation from the National Standards Board (NSB), the ACA National Board of Directors has elected to phase out accreditation for camps operated solely outside the U.S. and its territories. While ACA will still offer membership, support services, and education to international camps and individuals, September 1999 will be the last opportunity for international camps to be visited for accreditation. Currently accredited international camps may continue to be accredited for the remainder of their existing three-year cycle. All camps being affected have been notified of the recent decision and their options.

The rationale behind the decision is that ACA standards are based on the cultural values and requirements of the United States. Critical philosophies around health care, liability, insurance, and risk management are different in other cultures. Translating ACA standards to those areas in other countries leads to potential adaptation of the intent of the standards, which jeopardizes the integrity of the accreditation program. However, ACA will continue to serve as a resource to all international camp communities.
