THE PACESETTER DELOITTE & TOUCHE LLP THE New York-based Big Four firm has 1,439 local accounting professionals, 12 fewer than the year earlier, but remains the largest accountancy firm in Los Angeles County for the second consecutive year. The decline in professional staff comes after Deloitte's 2003 jump in employment in response to demand for consulting, tax and audit services relating to relating to relate prep → concernant relating to relate prep → bezüglich +gen, mit Bezug auf +acc Sarbanes-Oxley compliance. The demand in Los Angeles had been greater than expected. "We've we've Contraction of we have. we've have been importing people from other regions," said Tony Buzzelli, the national managing partner in charge of the L.A. office. Buzzelli said the strongest growth was seen in the entertainment and real estate sectors. The firm also focuses on manufacturing, technology, life sciences, health care and consumer-related industries. Deloitte was among the firms that reduced their client lists as a result of a greater load from Sarbanes-Oxley work. "We did not have a wholesale shedding shedding, n See exfoliation. shedding 1. exfoliation of entire skin, called also ecdysis, exuviate. 2. falling out of haircoat. 3. putting animals into a shed. 4. of clients," Buzzelli said. Instead, he said the firm gave notice last summer to clients who did not "focus seriously" on Sarbanes-Oxley. In 2004, Deloitte saw 17 percent growth in revenues from its L.A. offices. Buzzelli expects this year's revenues to be in the 12 percent to 15 percent range. Nationally, the firm reported revenues of $6.9 billion in 2004, up $400 million from the previous year. U.S. operations generated better than 40 percent of global revenues. --David Nusbaum
