Acclaimed international artist takes helm at FACT; Grandfather and mother lived in city.

LIVERPOOL'S ground-breaking FACT has appointed a new director after the shock departure of Gill Henderson last September.

He is the acclaimed international artist Mike Stubbs, currently Head of Exhibitions at the Australian Centre for Moving Image (ACMI ACMI Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance (wet lease)
ACMI Art & Creative Materials Institute
ACMI Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation
ACMI American College of Medical Informatics
ACMI Australian Center for the Moving Image
).

He accepted the post on his 49th birthday three days ago.

He is moving to Liverpool - where he has close family roots -with his wife and two children, and will take up the role in May.

Mr Stubbs said: "I am massively excited to take up the post of Director of FACT, the organisation at the cutting-edge of art and media, and one of the jewels in the crown of Liverpool's on-going cultural renaissance.

"Liverpool now has even greater opportunities in progressing as a world-class arts and cultural hub, and I look forward to applying my more recent experiences in Australia in driving that process through FACT."

Despite being born in Hertfordshire, his mother lived in Bootle and his grandfather worked as a shipping clerk at the tobacco company Ogdens, on West Derby Road.

The Foundation for Art and Creative Technology board chairman, Professor Drummond Bone, said: "Mike Stubbs possesses an international breadth of experience and the Board of FACT and Arts Council An arts council is a government or private, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts mainly by funding local artists, awarding prizes, and organizing events at home and abroad.  North West are very pleased to announce his appointment.

"As Liverpool approaches its year as European Capital of Culture 2008, and FACT presents one of its most ambitious and high-profile programmes to date, Mike is charged with leading the city's flagship new media arts organisation into this world spotlight and with developing exciting plans for the future direction of FACT."

Stubbs trained at Cardiff Art College and the Royal College of Art.

He was Senior Research Resident at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art (Dundee, Scotland) and Director of Hull Time Based Arts, where he established several innovative schemes to encourage production and exhibition of new media art.

He moved to Melbourne in 2003 to join ACMI as Curatorial cu·ra·tor

, Stubbs also co-founded Metamedia, a London-based production company specialising in art and music.

He is also an award-winning and respected moving image artist in his own right.

He has won more than a dozen major international awards, and, in 1999, he was invited to present a video retrospective of his own work at the Tate Gallery Tate Gallery, London, originally the National Gallery of British Art. The original building (in Millbank on the former site of Millbank Prison), with a collection of 65 modern British paintings, was given by Sir Henry Tate and was opened in 1897. , London.
