The new version of TOUCH OF EVIL, for which Schmidlin worked from Welles' original notes to create the director's cut of the film, was released last fall. The film earned Schmidlin awards from the New York New York, state, United States

GREED's re-edit will offer Schmidlin different challenges than those faced with TOUCH OF EVIL. GREED will require reconstructing missing footage using still photos, Von Stroheim's notes for the color-tinting of a few small areas and other resources. Much of director Von Stroheim's original eight-hour cut of the film was ordered destroyed by then-MGM production chief, Irving Thalberg, after he supervised the editing of the film to a length of just over two hours.

Fortunately, a version of the original, full-length screenplay was discovered in the MGM Collection, deposited at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by Turner Entertainment Company (TEC). Six hundred thirty-three rare stills of the missing sequences have also been located to aid in the reconstruction. Schmidlin will restore and reconstruct the final director's cut of the film, which originally ran four hours long.
