: AKLM AKLM Acclaim Entertainment, Inc. (stock symbol) ) today reported revenues of $62.6 million for its third quarter ended May 31, 1996 and a net loss of $3.97 million, or $0.08 loss per share.

"As predicted by several market analysts, we are reporting a loss for the third quarter of the current fiscal year," says Robert Holmes Robert Holmes may refer to:

  • Robert A. "Bob" Holmes, Georgia state legislator

, president of Acclaim. "Despite the loss, we are encouraged by the continued growth of the new entertainment hardware platforms Each hardware platform, or CPU family, has a unique machine language. All software presented to the computer for execution must be in the binary coded machine language of that CPU. Following is a list of the major hardware platforms in existence today. See platform. , including the Sony PlayStation Sony Playstation - Playstation , Sega Saturn The Sega Saturn (セガサターン Sega Sataan , multi-media PCs, and the forthcoming launch of Nintendo's N64. We anticipate that the dedicated gaming systems, alone, will sell in excess of 4 million hardware units by the end of this calendar year, signaling the end of the industry's transition from the 16-bit, cartridge-based gaming systems, and rejuvenating the software entertainment marketplace as a whole. As such, we continue to believe that our recent exit from the cartridge video game business was the right strategic decision for the company. While disappointed in our third quarter performance, we are pleased with our success in transitioning from the cartridge games business to entertainment software utilizing CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

In April of this year, the company announced that it was exiting the cartridge video games See video game console.  business and took a one-time cartridge market exit charge. During the company's fiscal 1995 third quarter, 73% of Acclaim's entertainment software gross revenue was derived from 16-bit cartridge games, and only 9% was derived from CD-ROM software. For the same period in 1996, the percentage of entertainment software revenue derived from CD-ROM sales jumped to 77%. Gross margins also improved on a year-to-year basis from 50% in 1995 to nearly 61% in 1996.

"This year of transition has been difficult for both the industry and Acclaim. We believe the end of this transition period for Acclaim is here, occurring during our current quarter, which ends in August," Holmes stated. "We have had numerous strong titles for the new hardware systems, yet the active user base of these systems to date has not been sufficient to offset the decline in the older technologies. We see that balance changing now, and anticipate that we will return to consistent profitability beginning in our next fiscal quarter commencing in September.
