Access Announces the Release of JV-Lite Version 1.2 and the Debut of its First IP Product, JV-Lite Source Core -- A Java-Compliant VM With Small Memory Footprint for the Digital Consumer Electronics and Embedded Systems Markets.

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 20, 1998--Access Co., Ltd., an embedded Internet software leading supplier, today announced the immediate shipment of the new release JV-Lite(TM) version 1.2, a Java(TM)-compliant Virtual Machine designed for the digital consumer market, and reference design kits on Hitachi SH-3 and Mitsubishi M32R/D R/D Rate of Descent
R/D Radius/Diameter
R/D Resolver to Digital
R/D Rig Down
 processors.

In addition, due to the strong demand from consumer electronics companies, Access debuted royalty-free JV-Lite Source Core as its IP product strategy unfolds.

JV-Lite is a clean room implementation based on the open Java byte code See bytecode.  specifications. With minimal class library and compact VM implementation optimized for embedded systems Embedded systems

Computer systems that cannot be programmed by the user because they are preprogrammed for a specific task and are buried within the equipment they serve.
, JV-Lite achieved dramatic memory reduction compared with 'PureJava' solution from Sun Microsystems Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA[3]) is an American vendor of computers, computer components, computer software, and information-technology services, founded on 24 February 1982. , which requires a large memory footprint Memory footprint refers to the amount of main memory that a program uses or references while running. This includes all sorts of active memory regions like code, static data sections (both initialized and uninitialized), heap, as well as all the stacks, plus memory required to hold  and has limited implementation for Java embedded applications.

JV-Lite extends Java's advantage of hardware independent, common software applications development to consumer electronics and embedded equipment. JV-Lite is ideal for memory-constrained mobile electronics and further provides a low-cost strategy for cost-conscious markets such as PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) A handheld computer for managing contacts, appointments and tasks. It typically includes a name and address database, calendar, to-do list and note taker, which are the functions in a personal information manager (see PIM). , smartphone, car navigation See GPS.  system, set-top-box, digital camera, factory automation and industry control markets.

JV-Lite Highlights

JV-Lite VM and class library can be embedded in ROM and run with minimum memory of 512KB ROM and 512KB RAM. With its byte-code level compatibility with JDK (Java Development Kit) A Java software development environment from Sun. It includes the JVM, compiler, debugger and other tools for developing Java applets and applications. Each new version of the JDK adds features and enhancements to the language. , JV-Lite applications can be easily developed by using commercial Java development tools. The biggest advantage of JV-Lite is its compact class library specifically designed for consumer electronics.

JV-Lite keeps compatibility with JDK in basic libraries such as java.lang, java.io, java.util, while it optimizes java.awt to reduce large memory requirements for embedded applications. Native code call from Java applications is available. JV-Lite can be integrated into NetFront browser as a plug-in module or run as a stand-alone module on commercial RTOS (1) (RealTime Operating System) An operating system designed for use in a real time computer system. See real time system, embedded system, process control and OS-9. .

JV-Lite Applications

JV-Lite has numerous design wins and has been shipped with products including PDAs, Intranet Terminals, and TV Games. Access further provides a compact JV-Lite version for mobile information appliances such as mobile phones, pagers and smart watches.

JV-Lite Pricing and Availability

JV-Lite version 1.2 is available now and the pricing for evaluation kits on Hitachi SH-3 and Mitsubishi M32R/D reference boards starts from 1,000,000 yen. Source Core License starts from 10,000,000 yen.

Development Platforms

JV-Lite will support processors such as Hitachi SuperH series, Mitsubishi M32R/D family, Fujitsu FR series, Cyrix Media GX, and NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.
VR series and V800 series, as well as major operating systems such as VxWorks, pSOS, OS-9, and Inferno.

Realtime JV-Lite

Realtime JV-Lite was announced in July as a product jointly developed by Access and OMRON that combines OMRON's realtime technology and Access' compact implementation. Realtime JV-Lite targets Java applications in Factory Automation and industrial control, which require high reliability and critical realtime performance.

Realtime JV-Lite will be demonstrated at the Embedded Systems Conference West in San Jose, Calif., in Nov. 1998 and is scheduled to ship in the first quarter of 1999. In addition, Access is working towards the realtime Java API standardization with related companies.

JVCOM

Access is currently developing Java-based Consumer Open Middleware (JVCOM) supported by Ministry of International Trade and Industry The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (通商産業省 Tsūsho-sangyō-shō or MITI) was one of the most powerful agencies in the Japanese government. (MITI). Its goal is to accelerate easy development of digital consumer and embedded devices by providing an open common middleware independent from CPUs and RTOSs.

Together with major electronics manufacturers and semiconductor vendors in Japan, Access is developing a Java-based middleware and standard specifications as a common platform for consumer electronics. JVCOM is projected to ship in March 1999 as a value-added solution to JV-Lite.

About Access

Access, headquartered in Tokyo, with an office in Santa Clara, Calif., is a leading Internet software company with its flagship products NetFront(TM), Compact NetFront(TM), and JV-Lite(TM). Since its inception, Access has established close working relationships with leading worldwide consumer electronics companies.

Over one million units of software licenses have been shipped and adopted by more than 20 major consumer appliances makers for TVs, set top boxes, word processors, PDAs, car navigation systems, cellular and PHS (Personal Handyphone System) A TDMA-based cellular phone system introduced in Japan in mid-1995. Operating in the 1880-1930 MHz band, PHS uses microcells that cover an area only 100 to 500 meters in diameter, resulting in lower equipment costs but requiring more base  phones, and dedicated terminals.
