Access Announces Free Demo Version of Internet Browser For Embedded Linux Market.

MILPITAS, Calif. and TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 24, 1999

Access Co. Ltd. today announced that it has placed a free demonstration version of its NetFront Internet browser on its web site for evaluation by developers of Linux-based embedded applications.

The browser can be downloaded from www.access.co.jp/product/develop/demo.html. Access' NetFront and Compact-NetFront browsers are very popular in Japan, where Access estimates that it has over 80 percent of the embedded browser market for devices such as personal digital assistants, mobile phones, digital televisions and video game consoles This is a list of video game consoles by the era they appeared in. Eras are named based on the dominant console type of the era (even though not all consoles of those eras are of the same type). Some eras are referred to based on how many bits a major console could process. .

Access is now trying to expand its leadership in the development of embedded browsers into the US and European markets, and it is one of the first companies to release such a full fledged fledge

 4.0, frames, cookies, Javascript, bookmarks, screen resizing, SSL 2.0/3.0, and PNG graphics. It operates under Linux 2.0.23 or later, with support for glibc 2.0 or 2.1, GTK+ 1.2, and zlib 1.1.

"NetFront 2.5 for Linux/GTK" also operates under Linux with Access' JV-Lite 1.3.1 clean-room compatible Java Virtual Machine A Java interpreter. The Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is software that converts the Java intermediate language (bytecode) into machine language and executes it. The original JVM came from the JavaSoft division of Sun.  (VM) plug-in module. NetFront operates in resource-constrained environments on a wide variety of embedded CPUs, such as ARM cores, Hitachi's SuperH series, IBM/Motorola's PowerPC, MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second.  Cores, and Mitsubishi's M32R/D series. Depending on market feedback, Access will release the productized version of "NetFront for Linux" during the second half of 2000. Pricing and exact availability have not yet been determined.
