Accelerated learning: with an Executive Vice President and funds in place, NAAEI is shifting into high gear to promote apartment industry careers and develop online and classroom training.

Moving forward with an aggressive agenda and considerable optimism, the National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI NAAEI National Auctioneers Association Education Institute ) has achieved tremendous progress throughout its second year, having taken the lead in creating and developing products and services to help satisfy the apartment industry's most critical need--the hiring, training and retaining of its workforce.

NAAEI in June surpassed its initial fund-raising fund-raising, large-scale soliciting of voluntary contributions, especially in the United States. Fund-raising is widely undertaken by charitable organizations, educational institutions, and political groups to acquire sufficient funds to support their activities.  goal of $5 million, raising $5.26 million through mid-July. The pursuit of the second goal of $7.5 million is under way and will be directed, in part, by Stephanie J. Powers, who this month will begin serving as NAAEI Executive Vice President.

Powers has more than 20 years' experience in public and non-profit program management, policy development and legislative outreach Outreach is an effort by an organization or group to connect its ideas or practices to the efforts of other organizations, groups, specific audiences or the general public.  in workforce development, disability employment, youth employment programs and special education reform.

members and will focus its effort and leadership on finding effective solutions to the human resource challenges facing the apartment industry," Powers said.

Powers said that through the use of technology, new connections and partnerships to workforce development sources and effective use of NAAEI's resources, NAAEI will develop innovative professional development opportunities for the incumbent workforce and actively market the industry's career pathways to prospective and future apartment professionals.

"During the past two years, this industry already has shown its willingness to financially support the goal of making the apartment industry a premier field for sound, innovative management," Powers said. "My job will be to marshal An English word that means to arrange into a particular order as a means of preparation. Getting to Work

NAAEI President Bill Wollinger, President of WinnResidential, Boston, said Powers is the right person at the right time.

"She is uniquely qualified to lead the Institute into the future and meet all of the challenges our industry is facing," Wollinger said. "NAAEI is fortunate to have a leader with Stephanie's background, capabilities and enthusiasm."

Deane Dolben, CAPS, Chairman of the NAAEI Capital Campaign and President of The Dolben Company, is among the NAAEI donors and is proud of the industry's response to the Institute.

"Just two years ago, the Institute was merely a plan to combine all of NAA's education entities to strategically focus on the industry's education needs," Dolben said. "Now, the resources and people are in place to help carry out the Institute's goals."

Recent apartment industry studies suggest that success in tomorrow's ever-changing market place will depend on companies' willingness to change staffing models, hiring and compensation practices and current business practices. Successful apartment companies will transition from a property-centric to a resident-centric business platform. NAAEI acknowledged the urgency felt by its members who are addressing this crisis.

PR Campaign to Promote Apartment Careers

NAAEI has launched the development of a campaign to promote the apartment industry as a viable career choice of university and high school graduates and to develop current and future industry leadership.

Being able to deliver this designation coursework 24/7, and eventually in multiple languages to anyone in the world, is a critical step in the process of career development for the industry.

"For NAAEI's certification programs' curricula to be approved for college credits puts us in a new league," said Tony Pusateri, CAPS, CPM (1) (Critical Path Method) A project management planning and control technique implemented on computers. The critical path is the series of activities and tasks in the project that have no built-in slack time. , Senior Vice President of Property Services, Equity Residential. "Rio Salado is the leader in this online education and training field. Allowing people to study apartment management, leasing or maintenance from home, at work or anywhere an Internet connection is available creates a tremendous opportunity for our industry to add to our workforce."

Unlike Phoenix University, Rio Salado is a publicly funded entity of state and local government. Its purpose is to serve local, national and international communities through e-learning and collaborative partnerships. It provides general education and courses for university transfer by offering applied programs that are aligned with workforce needs in business, industry and government.

Pusateri said that online learning enables the apartment industry to bring people immediately from school to the job with the skills and preparation necessary. Grants Support Staffing at University Programs

professors with apartment industry experience and Ph.D. candidates who have years of property management experience and who have decided to go back to school to earn their Ph.D.s, the first step to be appointed to a full-time faculty position. Once these apartment management practitioners earn their degree, NAAEI will help support their research and publication efforts, which are critical to the university tenure process.

NAAEI grants also are helping to fund the effort to recruit high school students to RPM. A series of nine, one-day mini-camps for high school students was designed to expose them to the apartment industry through apartment community tours and networking with RPM students, alumni and university advisory board members. The first such mini-camp is scheduled for this fall at Ball State University.

Rewritten CAM Course Well Received

NAAEI rewrote the Certified See certification.  Apartment Manager (CAM) designation program to include the enhanced financial, management and HR responsibilities of today's apartment manager.

Available since January 2006, this is the first major revision of one of NAAEI's most popular designation programs. The CAM program is a 60-hour classroom-based program intended to provide management personnel with the skills and knowledge required to effectively manage apartment communities.

NAAEI hired Performance Technology Associates, Beverly, Mass., to provide curriculum development services.

Howard L. Campbell, Ph.D., CPM, an Assistant Professor in the Residential Property Management Program at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., served as editor and subject matter expert and led the reorganization and revision.

"The response from students, professors and trainers has been excellent," Campbell said. "About 50 percent of the materials are either new or updated, and they are presented in a much easier way to read and teach. The study materials are serving as an ongoing reference guide for people entering the apartment workforce. This information is more than just something you study to pass the CAM test."

Career Path Development Information Presented

NAAEI has increased awareness of RPM as a major among university housing professors and is continuing this outreach to increase the number of RPM programs nationwide. NAAEI was a major sponsor of the Housing Education and Research Association (HERA) annual meeting in Denver last fall.

NAAEI board members Pusateri and Lester made a presentation on the apartment industry's need for talent during the next five years and provided apartment management career path information.
