AccelChip Joins The MathWorks' MATLAB Connections Program.

Business/Technology Editors

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 31, 2002

AccelChip, Inc. today announced it has joined MATLAB (MATrix LABoratory) A programming language for technical computing from The MathWorks, Natick, MA (www.mathworks.com). Used for a wide variety of scientific and engineering calculations, especially for automatic control and signal processing, MATLAB runs on Windows, Mac and (R) Connections, The MathWorks' partner program. With the introduction of AccelFPGA, DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  designers now have a direct path from the MATLAB technical language to industry-standard FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) A type of gate array that is programmed in the field rather than in a semiconductor fab. Containing up to hundreds of thousands of gates, there are a variety of FPGA architectures on the market.  design flows to facilitate the hardware acceleration In computing, hardware acceleration is the use of hardware to perform some function faster than is possible in software running on the normal (general purpose) CPU. Examples of hardware acceleration include blitting acceleration functionality in graphics processing units (GPUs) and  of DSP algorithms. AccelFPGA is the only commercially available tool that directly links the DSP design environment provided by The MathWorks with register transfer languages Register Transfer Language - (RTL) 1. A kind of hardware description language (HDL) used in describing the registers of a computer or digital electronic system, and the way in which data is transferred between them.

2.
(RTL (Register Transfer Level) A high-level hardware description language (HDL) for defining digital circuits. The circuits are described as a collection of registers, Boolean equations, control logic such as "if-then-else" statements as well as complex event sequences; ) such as VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) A hardware description language (HDL) used to design electronic systems at the component, board and system level. VHDL allows models to be developed at a very high level of abstraction.  and Verilog used in FPGA design flows.

The MATLAB Connections Program is available to third-party organizations that develop and distribute complementary, commercially available products and services based on the MATLAB technical computing environment. Connections partners help MATLAB users by providing industry or application-specific technology to fill their need for a complete solution. Partner products offer solutions that are integrated with MathWorks products and ensure ongoing compatibility in conjunction with new MATLAB releases.

"MATLAB is the language of choice by the overwhelming majority of DSP designers," said Dr. Prith Banerjee, President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of AccelChip, Inc. "By joining the Connections Program, we're ensuring our customers that they now have a seamless and supported flow directly from MATLAB and Simulink(R) to industry-standard FPGA design flows."

"We are pleased to welcome AccelChip to the MATLAB Connections Program," said Jim Tung, Chief Market Development Officer of The MathWorks. "DSP designers use MATLAB and Simulink to design, model, simulate, and generate code for their algorithms. AccelChip has utilized our open-system architecture to provide useful tools that help MATLAB and Simulink users convert those ideas and algorithms into a synthesizable HDL (Hardware Description Language) A language used to describe the functions of an electronic circuit for documentation, simulation or logic synthesis (or all three). Although many proprietary HDLs have been developed, Verilog and VHDL are the major standards.  description."

MATLAB integrates mathematical computing, visualization, and a powerful language to provide a flexible environment for technical computing. The open architecture makes it easy to use MATLAB and its companion products to explore data, create algorithms, and create custom tools that provide early insights and competitive advantages. AccelFPGA is the first commercially available DSP design tool that directly generates synthesizable designs from the MATLAB language. By providing a completely automated path from DSP algorithms to physical implementation, AccelFPGA shaves months off the traditional DSP hardware design cycle by eliminating the need to manually create RTL models and simulation testbenches, and providing an efficient path for DSP algorithm developers to perform physical design space exploration before committing their DSP design to a specific FPGA vendor or device architecture. AccelFPGA utilizes a Resource Description Language to allow the compiler to optimize the automatically generated RTL models for each targeted FPGA device thus ensuring the optimal hardware implementation of DSP algorithms.

AccelFPGA is available immediately with pricing starting at $40,000. Contact sales@accelchip.com for more information.
