"This initiative will both strengthen Abu Dhabi's appeal as a main tourism hub and reinforce its positioning as global aspirational destination," explained Mubarak Al Muhairi, director general, ADTA.

"Educational Tourism as a product and visitor segment has the potential of reaping strong returns for Abu Dhabi through increased visitations and awareness as well as competitive positioning," he added.

ADTA has drafted a special familiarisation itinerary for the visiting Singaporean school group which is focused on learning, interaction and experiential education.

This includes visit to leading Abu Dhabi organisations including Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC TDIC Target Data Input Computer ), the Petroleum Institute, Aldar Properties, Abu Dhabi Authority For Culture & Heritage, the Department of Economic Development, the Centre for Documentation & Research and Masdar -Abu Dhabi's future energy initiative.

The group earlier visited an Emirati family in its Al Ain home gaining deep insights into the local culture.

"The student exchange is paramount to the success of this programme as the long-term aim is to have overseas students come to Abu Dhabi and their Emirati counterparts going out to see and interact with the world within an educational context," explained Al Muhairi.

'We are working to ensure that the Singaporean students will return home with a better understanding of Emirati culture and heritage as well as of the country's long-term strategy,' he noted.

'The programme also benefits the ADTA's underlining desire of promoting cultural exchange and knowledge, not just for the Singaporean students but also for Emirati students,' he added.

ADTA is looking for the pilot to deliver key learnings which will then be used to enhance the programme to target future OST groups from the GCC, Europe and Australia, Al Muhairi said.

Pilot ADTA programmes are now to be developed for the EPP segment, which will typically engage people who combine travel with special interests such as sport, art, cookery, language and wellness activities, as well as the CT sector, which will attract leadership groups for short-term executive courses with a mix of classroom learning and site visits.

"Education tourism is a market segment that will not only immediately contribute to tourism development, but is a very worthwhile investment for the future with students who have a positive experience being more likely to return in their adult life," he added.- TradeArabia News Service
