WESTBURY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 31, 2000

Vasomedical, Inc. (Nasdaq SmallCap: VASO) announced today that the results of three studies discussing the Company's EECP EECP® Enhanced external counterpulsation, see there (R) (Enhanced External Counterpulsation enhanced external counterpulsation Cardiology A nonsurgical treatment of angina pectoris and CAD which ↑ blood flow to the heart by compressing blood vessels in the lower extremities. Its mission is to reduce the impact of cardiovascular disease in Europe.  (ESC) in Amsterdam August 26-30, 2000. The results, in two of the three studies, point to a sustained reduction of angina at six months post-treatment.

An abstract presented Wednesday, August 30th, by Ozlem Soran, MD, of the University of Pittsburgh, showed that those patients with poor left ventricular function do as well with EECP as their less sick counterparts. The patient data for this study had been collected by the International EECP Patient Registry at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. The study, entitled "Six month outcome of patients with left ventricular dysfunction treated with enhanced external counterpulsation for chronic angina," and which will also be presented at the upcoming meeting of the Heart Failure Society of America to be held in Florida September 10-13, looked at a cohort of more than 1,000 patients, 27% of whom had severe left ventricular dysfunction (LVD). The remaining patients had preserved left ventricular function. According to the study, both groups showed a significant reduction in angina and nitroglycerine use immediately following treatment and at six months post-treatment. In addition, a considerable portion of the LVD patients had a history of congestive heart failure congestive heart failure, inability of the heart to expel sufficient blood to keep pace with the metabolic demands of the body. In the healthy individual the heart can tolerate large increases of workload for a considerable length of time.  (CHF CHF

Also presented at this years ESC was an abstract entitled, "Improved stress radionuclide radionuclide /ra·dio·nu·clide/ (-noo´klid) a nuclide that disintegrates with the emission of corpuscular or electromagnetic radiations.

Data from this study showed that, among the individuals who underwent EECP therapy, many of whom had multivessel disease, had experienced a prior heart attack, or had undergone balloon angioplasty or bypass surgery, there was both an improvement in blood flow to the heart muscle and an increase in exercise tolerance. Commenting on the abstract, John Strobeck, MD, Medical Director of the Heart-Lung Center in Hawthorne, New Jersey Hawthorne is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 18,218. Hawthorne was originally part of Manchester Township, which was later subdivided to create Hawthorne, Haledon, North Haledon, Prospect Park, , said, "The evidence in this 217 patient study suggests, as previous publications have, that the improved blood flow to the heart muscle we see with EECP may be related to the recruitment of collateral circulation brought about by the widening of blood vessels in areas of the heart which had been previously under-perfused or the release of growth factors resulting in angiogenesis, the development of new blood vessels."

A third abstract entitled, "Does optimal diastolic Diastolic

Data from more than one thousand patients were analyzed in reaching the study's conclusions.

The Company will shortly be putting in place the infrastructure to allow it to more rapidly expand its direct presence in Europe and the Middle East. This, combined with a number of studies currently under way in different countries, will hasten the establishment of reimbursement for the therapy in these areas."
