Dr. Soon-Shiong, who is of Chinese heritage and a native of South Africa, is a noted research scientist, physician and surgeon, and was awarded this honor for his efforts in scientific innovation. He has devoted his career to developing next-generation technologies to enhance the medical care of patients with life-threatening diseases, including cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Dr. Soon-Shiong performed the world's first encapsulated islet transplant in a diabetic patient, developed the nanoparticle albumin bound (nab[TM]) technology platform, is a co-inventor of over 50 issued U.S. and foreign patents and has published more than 100 scientific papers.

As part of his commitment to bringing about evolutionary change to the practice of medicine and addressing the serious health care issues facing the country, Dr. Soon-Shiong and his family recently donated $35 million to the Saint John's Health Center Saint John's Health Center is a hospital in Santa Monica, California, USA.
